Just not enough space

Sometimes life brings you surprises that might cause some turbulence at the moment, but ultimately they lead you to exactly where you wanted to be. The Kram family has just finished some renovation on their home and were ready to get some rest when they had to start a whole new, much bigger reconstruction – but it was all for the most precious reason.
"Our house was built in the sixties as a multi-generation house. We replaced the heating in 2008. Then, when we received the happy news we'd be growing as a family, it quickly became clear that the space we had to work with was going to be too small", says Bernhard Kram, the homeowner. The father-to-be then set about planning an extension himself. After the almost two-month planning phase, a 60 m2-large extension was built, which has now become the center of family life following three months of construction.

Optimal placement of the flat roof windows

From the very start, managing the light was a part of the design process for the architects of Baukooperative. The idea was to have the natural light highlight the wood in the living room for a warm and inviting feel. Natural light is important to everyone but has a special role in the life of families with small children. Daylight helps kids to stay active, and it even helps them to focus and study – which is what they do in the first years of their lives, whether they are looking and books in a nook with their parents or making art, or playing hide and seek in the living room. "We used VELUX Daylight Visualizers to help us plan it all out. With the help of the VELUX visualizations, we were able to identify differences in the positioning of daylight sources during the planning process to be sure everything was perfectly positioned."

The family ultimately chose to place a flat roof window in a tucked-away corner of the extension as well as in the kitchen area. The curved glass roof light brings the magic of daylight into the home: the unique curved-shaped glass top allows rainwater to easily drain off the surface – even on 0° roof pitches. A unique design, slim frame, and invisible sash give you maximum daylight, even when you have a blind installed. The curved glass roof light has 2- or 3-layer glazing that delivers excellent energy performance whilst reducing noise when it rains, hails, or when there's traffic. So you have the best outdoors without any disturbance – something also very valuable for a family with small children.

Main benefits of VELUX roof windows

Since they are living in the home, the roof window proved it many advantages to the family. "The large windows and carefully positioned flat-roof windows enabled us to create a room filled with natural light right down to the room's furthest corners. "We always have bright light from morning to dusk and need very little artificial light.", explains Mr. Kram. And they managed to do so while protecting the privacy of their home too. "The idea for adding the flat roof windows came while we were planning, and it became clear that the more private tucked away area of the addition would be too dark." According to Mr. Kram, "Lighting that space from above through a flat roof window was really the perfect solution." Furthermore, the roof windows help with natural ventilation, making the air of the familyhome healthier and prevent the risk of forming mold in the more moist areas. The family decided to position a second flat roof window over the kitchen, which also makes venting the kitchen easier when they cook.

Bathed in golden light

Bernhard Kram lights up when he speaks of the "golden light", which, in the evening, when the sun is low in the west, spills in through the flat roof windows, bathing the entire room in warm, soft light.

New quality of life

With a few months of work, the family of four is now living their best life in their new home, collecting memories with their little ones. The home is exactly how they imagined the perfect place to raise their children. And it's not just the daylight. Bernhard Kram can't get enough of the views of the garden: "We sit at the dining table and look out at the old plum tree or watch the birds and squirrels--that kind of quality of life is just priceless. We're thrilled with the extension and really feel at home in the house."
