Achieving optimal views and luminosity

If you happen to live by the sea, wouldn’t you want to look at the endless blue and calming waves of water all the time? That was the plan of the Maretto, who wanted to have everything living in what Palermo can offer. To enjoy nature from their living space, in this flat-roofed loft space, large windows were opened up in the vertical walls in order to better exploit the sea views and open up the sight lines.
Flat roof windows increase the multi-directionality of the light and the balance of the field of vision. VELUX flat roof windows’ beautiful design brings the magic of daylight into your home. A unique design, slim frame, and invisible sash give you maximum daylight, even when you have a blind installed. The flat glass roof light has 2- or 3-layer glazing that delivers excellent energy performance whilst reducing noise when it rains, hails, or when there's traffic, while the electric operations make it easy to open the close the out-of-reach windows.

Main benefits of getting VELUX roof windows

With roof windows, spaces in the home are deeply lit, no matter how narrow or hidden they are: overhead light is not affected by the orientation of the home and allows spaces to be illuminated deeply throughout the day.

The light in this space is constantly changing so that the home seems to change and to move without moving, giving a restless dynamic to the space, mirroring the everchanging and always-moving sea and nature in general.

The windows are also the key element of the mood of this home: they create contact with the outside. In a location like this, missing an opportunity like that would be a crime. The panoramic view and the strong sense of variations in light over the day and with different seasons and weather conditions create a sense of harmony with the outside world.

Overhead and vertical windows in the same space improve light distribution

The light was a key element when designing the home of the Maretta. With the combination of the windows, the place now feels like a sunny day at the beach, offering a pitch-perfect view and a breeze of the sea. The coexistence of overhead and vertical windows in the same space enables the occupants to notice variations in light over the course of the day. The flat roof windows were placed some distance away from the vertical ones, to add multi-directionality and balance to the field of vision, bringing brightness to the wall and highlighting the movement of the light.

Maria Eliana Madonia,

architect

In an extremely bright space, it might seem unnecessary to introduce further light. But by letting light in from both vertical windows and the roof, the changes in light can be traced 360 degrees. The result is a home that seems to move without moving, one that is constantly being transformed.

The roof windows let in a new type of light

"Above all, I was looking for luminosity and views of the sea, the mountains, and the city of Palermo. As soon as we entered, my wife and I said: this is the house for us. To gain as much light as possible, we added windows to the roof to let in a different type of light. Over the day, the light changes, bringing serenity, tranquility, and depth", Gabriele Marretta, the homeowner.
VELUX awning blinds can be controlled from anywhere in the room with the ready-to-use wall switch. The electrical blinds run in aluminum side rails to ensure they operate smoothly and remain stable.

"The game of light from the roof windows is very special"
- Gabriele, homeowner
The combination of vertical and roof windows has allowed in a multi-directional form of light

Thanks to the roof windows, overhead light has been brought into the space. The multi-directional quality of the light makes the rooms appear to constantly change over the day. The house moves together with the light within it. At the same time, blinds offer the opportunity to block daylight, making the beach-vibe home a perfect space for resting or working. The VELUX anti-heat awning blind with black transparent mesh fabric blocks out the sun without compromising your view. Perfect for glare-free days in your work office or cool afternoons spent in your living room. The mesh is tested for wind, UV- and heat degradation, and provides long-lasting performance.
