Attic for the family

Bärbel Stolz and her husband, Sebastian were looking for a larger apartment for their family of four. When they had the chance to buy the undeveloped attic of a late 19th century block of flats in one of the side streets of the Helmholtzplatz, there was no hesitation on their part. They took up on the unique opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind home for their unique family, and graffiti filled walls are quickly turned into a family home. VELUX windows were a perfect fit for their unique needs both in the architectural and artistic point of view.

Main benefits of VELUX roof windows

After installing the windows, light filled every last corners: all rooms in the side wing and rear building have large VELUX lighting solutions or roof windows.

Quality of the windows was an important issue, as attics are tend to overheat in the summer and hard to heat in the colder months. VELUX offer windows with great energy balance, which optimize the climate of the area under the roof. The excellent thermal insulation of the roof and roof windows not only reduces heat loss in winter, but also prevents the penthouse from becoming too warm in summer.

The architect Schröger was reluctant to use a central mechanical ventilation system, as is now standard in many new buildings: "Installing that kind of system would have taken up valuable living space and is also quite maintenance-intensive", he explains. Together with the Stolz family, he decided to use decentralised ventilation with window fans. VELUX Balanced Ventilation - an uncomplicated alternative - was the optimal solution, creating a healthy living space and saving the family from wasting any area of their new home.

Lots of light and space

Bärbel and Sebastian wanted to fill the attic with lots of space and light. VELUX slanted and flat roof windows were up to the task. Operated with an elegant handle at the bottom, VELUX top-hung roof windows give you a full, open view of your skyline and maximise the amount of natural daylight.
The flat roof strip windows increase the multi-directionality of the light and the balance of the field of vision. VELUX flat roof window’s beautiful design brings the magic of daylight into your home. A unique design, slim frame and invisible sash give you maximum daylight, even when you have a blind installed. The flat glass rooflight has 2- or 3-layer glazing that delivers excellent energy performance whilst reducing noise when it rains, hails or when there's traffic.

VELUX Quattro is an impressive combination of two roof windows supplemented by two extension windows that opens and transforms any room. It provides an amazing view to the sky and outdoors. The fixed lower part of the solution ensures safety, especially in children's rooms.

Hallways are often forgotten spaces in flats that are rather dark, but with daylight flooding in through the flat roof windows, the long hallway became an additional room.

The hallway was transformed into a living space

The hallway is large and bright enough for the painting and crafting table used by both children. The cosy bed in the hall directly under the largest roof window is a popular meeting place. "We cuddle with the children here, they play together and we read them stories. Thanks to the electric motor, this flat roof window can be conveniently opened by remote control” the homeowner says.
